Jim Picken

Associate Director Music Ministry

Biographical Info

Jim Picken has been an Associate Director of Music Ministry at Knox since 2000. During this time he supervised the expansion of the Casavant pipe organ from 7 ranks to 27 ranks. (Gratitude is owed to all the Knox donors and volunteers, and to Steve Miller and Hart Godden for their expertise.) Jim enjoys his work with Paul and all of our inspiring choristers, with Mark Tremblay our Minister, and with the Knox people and their receptive and encouraging support.

Jim was born in Calgary, and graduated from Henry Wise Wood High School. He earned a degree in piano performance with Robin Wood when Victoria Conservatory was at Craigdarroch Castle (B.Mus. in Piano). His Anglican roots and sense of calling led him to read theology at Ripon College, Cuddesdon, Oxford (M.A. in Theology). He was ordained at Durham and served as curate in Jarrow Parish in the North-East of England. Jim’s next adventure was with the Society of St. Francis (Anglican religious order), and he was a Franciscan for ten fruitful years. Since coming to Knox, Jim has earned his M.Mus. in organ performance (U. of C., with Neil Cockburn) and has recorded three CDs of organ music.

Jim is a proud member of Knox Mission and Justice committee; a lazy activist for LGBTQ and other justice causes; he is the regular accompanist of the Calgary Men’s Chorus; and he enjoys planning concerts, alone and with small ensembles. His extra-musical pursuits include French, hiking, and journalling.
